The course covers test subjects such as:

• Freeway driving

Once you pass your in-person exam, the examiner issues a form you take to a tag agency, where you pay a fee and receive your learner’s permit. At the tag agency, your parent will need to be present. You’ll also need:

• Primary ID (usually a certified birth certificate)

• Proof of Social Security number

• Documentation of enrollment in a secondary or vocational school

• Documentation of enrollment in a driver’s education course or program (if you’re between 15 and 16)

If you have already turned 16 and have not had a permit, you will still need to pass the written driving exam and vision exam before you can get your permit. Finally, for anyone under the age of 18, you must have a permit for at least six months before applying for a license.

Requirements vary depending on age and driving experience. The categories below will provide details on which type of license or ID to apply for. Please note, customers are permitted to hold only one primary credential.

• Current driver license – For licenses that are valid or have been expired for less than 1 year, the only documentation that you need is your current driver license.

   

• State-issued birth certificate or valid U.S. passport – For licenses that have been expired for more than 1 year, you will need to bring a state-issued birth certificate or a valid U.S. passport. No other form of identification will be accepted. Photo copies of documents are not accepted.

   

• Name Change Document (if applicable) – If the last name to be entered on the Oklahoma License is different from the name on the Primary ID, the applicant must bring in a document showing a legal name change.

Applying for Your License If You’re Under 18

Getting Your OK Driver’s License

To get an Oklahoma driver license, a learner’s permit must be held for six months from the issue date for anyone under the age of 18. A Driver Education Completion Certificate must also be presented if the applicant is under the age of 16 ½. This also includes any behind-the-wheel training from a Parent-Taught Driver Education course. If you are over 18, you only need to hold the permit for a minimum of 30 days.

The state of Oklahoma has a program called the Graduated Driver License (GDL) program which limits the hours during which teen drivers may be on the road.

New drivers will need to go to a Driver License Exam station to complete their Oklahoma driver’s license test.

When you’re ready to apply, bring the following with you:

For applicants between the age of 16 and 16 ½

Once you’ve had your learner’s permit for six months, had no road violations, and have turned 16, you can apply for your driver’s license. You’ll need to pass a road test, also called a driving skills exam, at one of the examiner sites. Once you pass, you’ll be issued an intermediate license with the following provisions:

• You can only drive between 5 a.m. and 10 p.m. except for activities related to school, church, or work. You can also drive outside these hours if you’re accompanied by a licensed driver at least 21 years old.

• You can only have one passenger or only people who live in your home in the car. You can have additional passengers if a 21-year-old licensed driver is in the car with you.
