You WILL need a new CA in the following instances:

• You’ve been a California fake driver’s license resident for a while and have never had a fake license.
• You’ve just moved to CA and are trying to:
  
  • Apply to get a CA driver’s license.
  • Transfer your out-of-state license.
• You wish to drive any of the non-commercial Class A and B vehicles mentioned above. (“Types of CA Driver’s Licenses”)
• You are in the U.S. legally.
  
  • If you have a diplomatic fake driver’s license from the U.S. Department of State, you don’t need to get a new CA driver’s license.

You will not need a CA driver’s license in the following instances:

• You’re over 18 years old and just visiting California with an out-of-state license.
• You’re an active member of the military or you’re a dependent stationed in CA. This applies if you have a valid out-of-state license and are not a resident of California.
• You drive farm vehicles off of public roads.
• You only drive off-highway vehicles and/or snowmobiles without going on public roads (except to cross).

• Once you finish the driver’s education and pass the permit test, you can start your behind-the-wheel training. California requires that you drive for 50 hours, 10 of which must be at night, with an adult who is 25 or older.

If you already have a California DL, you can renew it in person at a DMV office, by mail, or online. 

It is illegal to drive with an expired DL and you can be cited. There are no late fees to renew a DL that has already expired. 

If you already have a California Fake ID driver’s license, you can renew it in person at a DMV office, by mail, or online. 

If you are a commercial driver and your CDL has been expired for over two years, you’ll need to take a skills test for the type of commercial motor vehicle you will be driving to renew your license. To better prepare yourself for the skills test, visit the California Commercial Driver’s Handbook (PDF).

Renew your CDL in person:

• Complete a CDL Application or bring in the DMV renewal notice mailed to you (cross out any old information and write in the current information).
• Visit a DMV office, where you will:
  
  • Provide residency document on every renewal.
  • Provide BD/LP documents if renewing for the first time since May 10, 2017.
  • Submit a completed 10 Year History Record Check (DL 939) (PDF) (if you’ve been issued a DL of any kind in another state or jurisdiction in the last 10 years).
  • Have your thumbprint scanned.
  • Pass a vision exam.
  • Have your photo taken.
  • Pay the nonrefundable application fee (application and fee valid for 12 months).
  • Take the knowledge test(s) (if required). Your renewal notice will indicate if you need to take a knowledge test. You are allowed three attempts to pass each of the required knowledge tests. If you fail the same test three times, your application is no longer valid and you will need to reapply. To allow for sufficient testing time, we do not administer knowledge tests within 30 minutes of closing.
  • When you apply for a REAL ID in person, you must also provide proof of your identity and residency from the list of acceptable REAL ID documents

After you complete these requirements, we will issue you a temporary DL until you receive your new license in the mail. The temporary license is valid for 60 days.  You will receive your DL via mail within within three to four weeks. If you have not received your DL card after 60 days, visit Driver’s License & ID Card Status.

It is illegal to drive with an expired REAL California Fake  ID DL and you can be cited. There are no late fees to renew a DL that has already expired.

You may be able to renew your DL online if you:

• Are within 90 days before or 12 months after the expiration date.
• Do not need to change your address or personal description.
• Are not applying for a REAL ID compliant DL or California Fake ID for the first time.
• Are not renewing a commercial DL.

In addition to these 50 hours, you have to drive for at least 6 hours with a certified driving instructor. You can either do this through your school, if driver’s ed is offered, or through a California-certified driver’s education course. Some driver’s education courses that provide classroom instruction to help you prepare for the permit test also include behind-the-wheel training with California Fake Driving License , but with some other companies you’ll need to arrange for behind-the-wheel training separately. Keep in mind that you’ll need to keep track of all the hours you drive and have a parent sign off on them before you can get your driver’s license.

The Road Test

Once you’re 16 years old and have had your learner’s permit for at least 6 months, you’re eligible to take the DMV road test. Go to the California DMV website to schedule your road test. Bring the following things to the DMV when you go to take your road test:

If you received a notice to renew your DL in person:

Parent/guardian

The road test will last about 20 minutes and will cover all the driving basics, including:

Left and right turns

Stops at intersections (controlled and uncontrolled)

Backing up along a straight line

Lane changes

The Provisional California Fake Drivers License

If you pass the road test, you’ll get your provisional license! That means you can drive, but with a couple caveats. Until you turn 18 or have had your provisional license for one year:

You can’t drive between 11:00 pm and 5:00 am with your California Fake Driving License

You can’t have any passengers under 20 years old in your car, unless you’re also with a licensed driver of 25 or older

Exceptions to these rules include emergencies and family, school, or work necessities. After a year of having your provisional California Fake Drivers license (or your 18th birthday), these restrictions fall off and you’re free to drive whenever and with whomever you want.
