If you are a new applicant for a fake driver’s license, instruction permit, identity card, or driver training permit, you are not required to provide the following documents:

To apply for an Illinois driver’s license or State ID card, you must bring original, unexpired documents that prove:
- Your legal name and signature
- Your date of birth
- Your Social Security number (or acceptable proof that you are not eligible for one)
- Your Illinois residency
You must show documents from Groups A, B, C, and D. The documents will be reviewed and scanned. Some documents may count for more than one group.

What do you need to bring?
Depending on what you are doing, you’ll be required to bring specific documents from each group. Scroll down for the types of documents that satisfy each group.
- To get a first-time ID or REAL ID, you need to bring:
- 1 document from Group A (signature)
- 1 from Group B (birthdate)
- 1 from Group C (Social Security)
- 2 from Group D (Illinois residency)
- Renewing or correcting a standard ID
- 1 from Group A
- 1 from Group D if your address has changed
- Renewing or correcting a REAL ID
- 1 from Group A
- 2 from Group D if your address has changed
- Getting a duplicate
- Updating your name, date of birth, Social Security number, or gender
- 1 document from Group A
- Documents that link your old information to your new one. For example, a court order or amended birth certificate.

Minors Driver Education (14 years and 9 months to 17 years)
TEMPORARY INSTRUCTIONAL PERMIT (TIP)
All students enrolled in driver education must present a TIP to our driving school. You can obtain your TIP at the OMV. The cost of the TIP will be the cost of a regular license; however, no additional fee will be assessed when the student completes driver’s education and returns to the office to obtain a learner’s permit. Upon successful completion of driver’s education, the TIP must be surrendered to OMV along with proof of successful completion of the appropriate driver’s education course and any other necessary documents.
Not all documents are accepted for a REAL ID. To find out whether a document can be used for a REAL ID, use the REAL ID interactive checklist or review the full list of acceptable documents (PDF) from the Illinois Secretary of State.
Group A: Proof of signature
- Canceled check (dated within 90 days of application)
- Consular card (current or expired less than 2 years)
- Cooperative driver testing program certificate
- Court order
- Major brand credit card or debit card (major brand like American Express, Diners Club, Discover, Mastercard, and Visa)
- Driver’s license or ID card (current) issued by an agency of the U.S. government
- Foreign passport
- Illinois driver’s license (current or expired less than 1 year)

- Consular report of birth abroad
- Court order showing legal change of birth date
- Illinois driver’s license (current or expired less than 1 year)
- Illinois ID card (current or expired less than 1 year)
- Naturalization certificate (N-550 or N-570)
- REAL ID driver’s license or ID (current or expired less than 1 year)
- Social Security award letter (for primary beneficiary only)
- U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) forms:

All applicants must apply to the Office of Motor Vehicles for a class E Temporary Instructional Permit (TIP) prior to participation in the knowledge test, operation of a motor vehicle during on-road driving skills instruction, or participation in the on-road driving skills test. The TIP may be issued to any individual that is at least 14 years of age. The TIP allows a driver education student to operate a motor vehicle when accompanied by a driver education instructor and when completing behind the wheel instruction or during the administration of a skills test. Applicants shall meet all other Office of Motor Vehicles identification requirements. This requirement does not apply to applicants enrolled in a National Guard Youth Challenge Program. Any student enrolled in a driver education, driver training program, or a pre-licensing training course prior to September 4, 2018 is exempt from this requirement.
Documents Required for Issuance of a Temporary Instructional Permit (TIP)
- Proof of identification
- Proof of residency
- Verification of your Social Security Number
- Acceptable verification includes your Social Security card, W2 form, or a print out from the Social Security Administration verifying the number. If you do not have a Social Security Number, a letter from the Social Security Administration must be presented. The number may also be given verbally.
- You must also present one additional form of identification such as a photo work ID, high school diploma, insurance card, etc.
Additional Requirements for Applicants Seventeen and Under
- The signature of the custodial parent or legal guardian is required for the issuance of any license (including first time applications, duplicates and changing restrictions).
- Documentation must be presented to prove custody or legal guardianship.
- Identification must be presented by the minor and the parent or guardian.
- Only the domiciliary parent may sign if joint custody has been awarded.
Learner’s Permit
You must possess a temporary instructional permit and complete all required testing before becoming eligible for issuance of a learner’s permit.
You must be at least fifteen before a learner’s permit can be issued.
A learner’s permit must be held for a minimum of 180 days, unless the applicant is 17 years of age or older.
The required knowledge and skills tests are administered by the driver education provider. An 80% is the minimum passing score for the knowledge test. If the applicant does not have a good understanding of the written English language they may bring a translator to assist with any class knowledge (written) tests except CDL.
A vision test will be administered prior to the issuance of a learner’s permit. You must have 20/40 vision in one or both eyes to pass.
Full License
You must be at least 17 years of age and you must pass the vision, knowledge (written) test and road skills test to be issued a full license. If the applicant does not have a good understanding of the written English language they may bring a translator to assist with any class knowledge tests except CDL.
